A Nova Scotia colleague helps women and families fleeing domestic abuse

May 26, 2021

Our Bedford, Nova Scotia, colleague Jennifer O’Neil joined Shelter Movers just before the beginning of the pandemic. Shelter Movers consists of volunteers who facilitate free moving services for those fleeing domestic abuse.

Sometimes it is resettling someone from a shelter to a permanent home or picking up furniture donations. There are three types of moves: low-risk, medium- to high-risk and urgent exit. When safety is a concern, volunteers are escorted by security or police.

Touched by Jennifer’s involvement, iA Financial Group supported her and made a donation via our donation policy for employees who get involved in their community.

Jennifer explains why she’s involved:

“I am truly grateful for my life and my family. I was looking for a way to give back to my community. With gender-based violence being a harsh reality affecting all socio-economic groups in Canada, I felt I could make a difference here.

I started as a mover and now I am a lead mover, leading volunteers during a move. I often drive the moving truck as well. I have led every level of move and I can say it is the most humbling work I have ever done. I have been thanked by a client more than once for saving their life. Before Shelter Movers, it was very difficult for the victims to leave.

I challenge all iA staff to find their own way to make a difference in their community!”

Thank you, Jennifer! Hopefully this will inspire others to get involved.
